In the last 10 years, enrollment in the Anchorage school has been reduced by approximately 5000+ students.
Right now there are approx 18 schools in the district thinking to reduce them.
The biggest reason for to decline in enrollment because of budget gap due of 68 million dollars last year.
The district is considering closing some schools to fill the gap between them.
The chief financial officer Jim has said that the district could save approx 4 million if it closed five elementary schools.
There is only one option to close district schools to fill the budget gap.
While the district must approve a balanced budget in February,
one-time state assistance could arrive a few months later, alleviating some of the budgetary pressures.
