The term “hyper-converged infrastructure” refers to a software-defined IT framework that replaces traditional data centres by merging virtualized computing, virtualized networking, and software-defined storage in a single, federated platform. Hyperconverged infrastructure provides greater flexibility for the deployment and sharing of computing resources across the enterprise by divorcing the data centre from physical equipment and working in a virtual environment.

HCI (hyper-converged infrastructure) can offer the agility of public cloud resources to businesses contemplating their alternatives for a technology refresh without letting go of control over the resources required to run and maintain their own on-premises systems. Although employing HCI instead of, or in addition to, public cloud resources have a number of benefits, the cloud and HCI are not mutually exclusive.
