How to Use
- Select your tax year, residency, and filing status.

- Click Calculate Tax to view your estimated tax breakdown.
How It Works
Federal taxable income is estimated by subtracting eligible exemptions and deductions from income. The tool applies the selected year's federal ordinary-income tax brackets.
Effective income tax rate = estimated total income tax ÷ gross income × 100. State tax is estimated separately using the optional flat rate.
Important Note
This is a simplified U.S. income tax planning tool, not a tax filing calculator. It assumes all entered non-treaty income is subject to ordinary graduated federal rates. Nonresident scholarship withholding rules, special income categories, treaty-specific calculations, credits, alternative minimum tax, state-specific deductions, and other special rules are not modeled.
Nonresident aliens generally cannot claim the standard deduction, except where specific exceptions apply. Resident alien results assume eligibility for the standard deduction and the selected filing status. The tool assumes the taxpayer is under age 65 and does not qualify as a dependent.
F-1 and J-1 students may qualify for exemptions from Social Security and Medicare taxes depending on their circumstances. These payroll taxes are not included. For official rules, consult IRS guidance for international students and U.S. tax treaty guidance.
