15. Paper Mache

Use a simple mixture of flour and water. Mix one part flour with about 2 parts of water until you get a consistency like thick glue. Add more water or flour as necessary. Mix well to get out all the bumps. Add a few tablespoons of salt to help prevent mold!

a) Pulp Recipe for Paper Mache

Materials Needed:

  • Newspaper
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Glue

Instructions:

A pulp mixture is great for making smooth, fine details in your paper mache creations or creating small objects. It would, however, take a lot of it to complete a larger project.

Tear the newspaper into tiny pieces and put them in a large bowl. Add just enough warm to hot water to completely cover the newspaper. Let soap overnight.

Once your newspaper has soaked for several hours, get your hands into it! Play with it, mix it, and squeeze it through your fingers until it looks like oatmeal! Try to get as many lumps out as possible. If necessary, add a bit more water and let it soak a little more.

Once you have it as smooth as possible, add a few tablespoons of salt to help retard mold. Mix it again with your hands. Once mixed thoroughly, squeeze out any excess water and add a few tablespoons of glue. Now you are ready to use your paper mache pulp!

If you don’t want to wait overnight, you can add your newspaper to boiling water and let it boil until the newspaper falls apart. You have to watch this carefully and possibly add extra water if necessary. You can also try letting your newspaper and hot water mixture sit for a few hours and then put it in a blender or food processor. Don’t forget to add the glue and salt once your mixture is smooth!

Store your pulp in an air-tight baggie or bowl in the refrigerator for a very long time!

b) Paper Mache Paste

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup non-self-rising wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup powdered resin glue
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 4 drops oil of cinnamon

Mix flour and resin glue in a saucepan. Make a paste by adding 1/2 cup warm water. Add hot water, stirring vigorously to prevent lumps. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture is thick, clear, and smooth. Add oil of cinnamon.

Makes about 1 pint.

How to use it: For best results, use this paste within a few days of preparation. The paste gives a very hard finish to paper-mache projects as furniture, candlesticks, and bowls. Store paste in a covered glass jar.

16. Face Paint

1 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp water
1/2 tsp cold cream
food coloring

Mix the cornstarch, water, and cold cream thoroughly. Add food coloring a drop at a time until you get the color you want. Use a small brush to paint cool designs on those cute faces. Store the different colored paints in small covered containers. Paints are easily removed with a little cold cream.

17. Soap Suprise

Encourage your children to bathe. This fun soap will reveal a surprise when used up!

Materials:

1 cup of grated Ivory soap
1/4 cup warm water
food coloring
small rubber toy (Make sure toy has no sharp edges)

  1. Mix water, soap and food coloring together in a medium bowl. Stir the mixture until it begins to thicken.
  2. Remove the mixture from the bowl and knead it until it is the consistency of very thick dough.
  3. Roll the dough into the shape of a ball.
  4. Make a hole in the center of the ball that is big enough for the small rubber toy to fit inside.
  5. Fill the hole with the treasure then seal with some extra dough.
  6. Allow to dry overnight before using.
  7. The Exploding Volcano

This may get messy!

18. Homemade Bath Salts!

2 1/2 lb. Epsom Salts

Food Coloring

Perfume or scented oil

Combine Epsom salts with food coloring and perfume in a large bowl. Mix well so the color is even. Put into smaller jars and let stand 4-6 weeks before using. This causes the odor to blend with the salts.

This bath salt is very soothing and makes for a very relaxing bath.

19. Gift in a Jar

“Gift In A Jar” is potpourri gel. These are sold in Bath & Body for about $6-8. They are jars, covered with lace that has scented potpourri jell that evaporates over time. I use 8 ounce quilted mason jars for mine. I’ve seen people use baby food jars, 16-ounce jars, ivy bowls, and lots of other creative glass containers.

Ingredients:

2 cups liquid potpourri

4 packets powdered gelatin

Up to 2 cups water (optional. The water makes more liquid but it also decreases the scent. Recommended if you are using a very potent potpourri)

Directions:

Heat 1 cup liquid potpourri to simmering in an old pot on high heat. Before it boils, turn the heat to low to maintain the simmer. Stir in the gelatin. Stir constantly until the gelatin is dissolved. Remove from heat. Add the second cup of potpourri and stir well. Add water if desired. Pour the mixture into warmed jars. Leave uncovered and undisturbed overnight. The mixture will set into a jelly-like substance. Cover with lace, tulle, or other creative tops for a beautiful room freshener. The 8-ounce jars last about 8 months depending on how much water you add. (More water, shorter life.)

This is a very easy gift to make and people love them. From start to finish, one batch takes about 15 minutes plus the time to decorate the lid. I add a gift tag to the top of the jar with a description of what the gift is, who it’s to/from, and a warning to keep out of the reach of children. Potpourri is not something you want to see kids eating. Hope you enjoy it
